The Golden Compass and My Daemon

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

I found this interesting profile test that match you with a daemon in the story of The Golden Compass. My daemon matched is Tarquin.

I watched this movie on Wednesday (12/12/07) which I think is one of the most interesting movies I have ever watched. It’s full of misery and exciting scene especially when Lyra (Dakota Blue Richards), the main actress of the story, deals with Marisa Coulter (played by Nicole Kidman).

The courage that Lyra gave me is strong. She won’t fear at the situation where dangers are around her. And she’s so smart that she knew Mrs. Coulter cheated her while she told her that she’s her mother.

I think I’m going to buy this novel and read up because I can’t wait to finish the story.

Without my notice, my Hotmail account has been upgraded to 1GB of storage space! Time to celebrate! Wait…I seldom use Hotmail though. Maybe I could use it as public email address to capture spam…Sorry, Hotmail.

Yahoo! Mail Beta vs Gmail

Friday, October 27th, 2006

Recently, I’ve switched to Yahoo! Mail Beta. Since I have email accounts at Yahoo! and Gmail, so I would like to compare these two webmail services.

The first time I logged in into Yahoo! Mail Beta, I discovered that the login process is quite slow. Not only the login process, loading of emails are also slow. If not mistaken, Yahoo! Mail Beta uses Ajax as one of the developing technique. But it’s quite sad to say that this didn’t improve the speed of loading.

For Gmail, logging in and loading of emails are extremely fast. Maybe it is because of the simplicity of the interface design.

Yahoo! Mail Beta provides tab browsing for emails, composing emails, RSS feeds, etc. This means that you can do multiple tasks on a single page. Oh yes, RSS feeds. You can use the built-in function of Yahoo! Mail Beta to view your subscribed RSS.

Another issue that makes me think Gmail better than Yahoo! Mail Beta (actually since previous Yahoo! Mail) is spam capture. Everytime I check emails on Yahoo! Mail, I have to mark few emails as spam. I think the SpamGuard feature of Yahoo! Mail is not efficient enough. But for Gmail, it can identify spam very efficient.

Apart from that, Gmail allows users to check their emails using POP Mail Client (e.g. Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird etc) whereas Yahoo! Mail needs users to pay fees to upgrade the account in order to enjoy this feature.

Although Gmail is a lot better than Yahoo! Mail Beta, I’ll continue to use Yahoo! Mail because I use this account since 17 years old (the first year I used the Internet).

How about you? Which webmail services are you using? Would you like to share your experience?
