Linux and Ubuntu Counters

Linux Counter and Ubuntu Counter are projects that keep track of Linux and Ubuntu users around the world. I’ve just registered myself to the counters and here’s my buttons showing my counter number of using Linux and Ubuntu.

Mario Alternative for Linux

Addicted to Mario but want to try some alternative? Here comes Secret Maryo Chronicle. The download page provides different kinds of installer for Windows as well as many distributions of Linux. However, the default installer doesn’t come with music package. If you wish to enjoy the game with melodic music, you may download the package on the download page.

For Ubuntu users, if you wish to install the game by downloading .deb package, you may install it easier by using GDebi Package Installer.

First Try on KDE4

I just installed KDE 4 on my Ubuntu 7.10 and tried it for once. First impression - it’s pretty! First thing that I discovered was the little icon on the top right hand corner of the screen. Hovered the mouse over and I knew it’s used to add widgets to desktop. I was so eagerly added two widgets - the KDE Application Launcher Menu and the Logoff Manager (cannot remember the name).Second, which is not a good discovery, some of the icons on the application launcher menu are missing! Without hesitation, I started the System Settings (same function as “Control Panel” in Windows) to see if any wrong configurations caused this. Unluckily, System Settings crashed when I was trying to access the Display setting.

I tried to search through the bug reports in official KDE website but so far cannot find anything helpful. Anyway, I’m sure the developers will release updates and fixes with respect to those bugs reported. So, I’ll just sit and wait.

If you want to try KDE4, visit this page and follow the instructions given.

I Nearly Created A Disaster

Recently, I encountered a bug while I’m updating my Kubuntu 7.04 with adept updater. The update package that caused the crash is the Linux kernel 2.6.20-generic. Whenever I downloaded and tried to update the package, an error occured. The error message is something like: if you install this package, it’s break your system. But I’ve decided not to bother this issue since I’m upgrading to Kubuntu 7.10. However, I can’t upgrade my system using adept manager due to some unknown error (most probably is the Linux kernel package). So, I’m downloading Kubuntu 7.10 to upgrade manually.

Now let me tell you how my stupidity nearly caused a disaster. Previously I partitioned my 60GB hard disk into 5 partitions using PowerQuest Partition Magic 8.0 (now known as Norton Partition Magic) which are 40GB for my Windows XP as system root, 10GB as Linux ext3, 5GB as Linux ext2, 1GB as Linux swap and the others another partition for my Windows XP. Jeff told me once that it’s better to let the root (partition to store system files of Linux) to be Linux ext3.

So, I tried to format the other Linux ext2 partition to Linux ext3. However, it failed with the reason that the file system is not supported. I don’t know why is that happening. Here came my stupidity, I converted the Linux ext2 and Linux ext3 into NTFS partition hoping that I can partition NTFS easier. After the system rebooted (Kubuntu will install a booting system called Grub for dual-booting), “Error 17″ occured. Then, I cannot boot into both Kubuntu and Windows XP. “This is great…”, I said to myself.

The first thing in my mind at that time is, I wanted to format my laptop. Although I’ve just backed up some files, I don’t want to lost my music files under Windows XP. On the other hand, I installed The Sims 2 with all the expansion packs and I don’t want to reinstall them (which will take me few hours to do so). Then, I tried to boot from Kubuntu 7.04 Live CD hoping that I can reinstall it. Guess what, I did it. I’ve successfully installed Kubuntu and managed to boot into my Windows XP platform. Anyway, I’ll install Kubuntu 7.10 later.

So, the moral of the story is: don’t try to do anything stupid to your hard disk, or else you might not be able to get back your data (although there are some ways).
